Hello from The Next Waltz,
Our goal is for the “Song of the Month” to hit your inbox the first of every month. It may be a tribute to one of the greats or just a tune that really speaks to the featured performer. We think you’ll really enjoy the individual spin these artists put on some old favorites, not to mention the raw and organic difference in these songs recorded on analog tape.
Our June Song of the Month is the first in a series of Guy Clark songs that we made for the hell of it. It takes a good while to process losing an artist like Guy. Not sure that is accurate cause there really is no artist like Guy. His influence on our Texas Music Scene is elemental and you just want to pick up a guitar sing a couple songs and smile. That’s what we did. Sunny Sweeney took a moment from releasing her new record Trophy to help us pay tribute to Guy. When she chose “Heartbroke”, one of Guy’s big hits, we had the idea to get Redd Volkhart to play electric guitar. All guitar nerds are well aware of Redd from his years in Merle Haggard’s band to being a guitar picker legend in Austin - no small feat. One of the songs Guy wrote with Rodney Crowell, “Heartbroke”, really bears the stamp of both these great artists. Just shows what a great song can do against all odds. Almost swing, very country, unmistakably Texas, and simply original - Sunny Sweeney, Guy, Rodney, and the boys. Thanks for being a part of The Next Waltz Family!
