Hey there folks,
We’re so proud to share our newest release with y’all. Hayes Carll is known as one of the best young songwriters writing the story of new country music. With wit, poetry, and insight, he can paint those pictures that Texas songwriters are known for at their best.
Just listen to songs like “It’s A Shame”, “Beaumont”, and “Long Way Home”. At The Next Waltz, we don’t get into the authenticity debate. We just work with folks where there is no debate.
It is fitting that we were able to help Hayes pay tribute to icon, Guy Clark, whose passing in 2016 left a legacy to be celebrated, and a body of work whose influence is felt in roots music the world over.
It was great for Hayes to pick a song from Guy’s later body of work to show what a continuously vital songwriter he was for 50ish years. Carll’s take on “Magnolia Wind” is rough and sweet all at the same time. The way the best country music is.
“If I can’t dance with you then I won’t dance at all. I’ll just sit this one out with my back to the wall.”
Guy Clark was unique among the deans of Texas Country songwriting for his willingness to mentor and encourage as well as write songs with many up and coming artists through the years. Carll’s story of writing with Clark the first time is great to hear. You can listen to him talk about his experiences in our interview with Hayes.
Guy and Townes, Willie, Kristofferson, and Rodney Crowell added poetry to country music and we are all the better for it.
If you like your country music a little more on the good side, artists like Turnpike Troubadours, Rodney Crowell, Kelly Willis, Lee Ann Womack, Holly Williams, Randy Rogers, Jerry Jeff Walker are all making the trek out to Lockhart and telling the stories of our time - with great songs and sweet harmonies.
See you down the road,
